Standard dance - Foxtrot

  • The foxtrot is an independent standard dance and is not comparable to the 4-step of the disco fox. The sporty counterpart to the foxtrot is the quickstep, with many dynamic elements.

  • Accordingly, the posture is also somewhat more relaxed than in the quickstep and more compact in smaller dance spaces (party dance posture).

  • The foxtrot is danced in 4/4 time with the following dynamics (long / long / short / short

    • Step 1 - long

    • Step 2 - long

    • Steps 3 and 4 - short.

  • Steps 1 and 2 are heel steps, steps 3 and 4 are ball-of-the-foot steps.

  • The foxtrot, which originated around 1910, is a standard social dance in 4/4 time.

  • The entire basic step is danced over 6 beats, or 1.5 measures.

  • Since 1924, two versions of the dance have existed, with different speeds: the slower version is the slow foxtrot, and the faster version is the quickstep.

  • Compared to the aforementioned very demanding dances, The foxtrot is relatively simple, requiring no special posture, foot position, or anything similar.

  • In 1963, the foxtrot was included in the World Dance Program.

  • However, it has not yet been used as a competitive dance.
