Salsa

  • The basic rhythm is short/short/long.

  • We begin on beat 1 and count 1, 2, 3. 4 is a short pause, 5, 6, 7, 8 is another short pause.

  • The basic salsa step can be danced in three variations:

    • In place, forward and back (Mambo Basic), and to the right and left.

  • In salsa, the man starts with his left foot, and the woman starts with her right foot. All steps are danced under the body, and the arms are swung above the hips.

  • The basic step can also be modified into a rocking step. This rocking step can be danced to the right and left, as well as forward and back. Regarding hand positions, the man takes the woman's right hand from the side with his left hand, unlike in standard dances where the hand position is frontal. This hand position facilitates leading movements.

  • ... The gentleman's right hand rests on the lady's left shoulder blade, and she places her left arm on the gentleman's right arm.

  • To begin, it's advantageous not to stand directly in front of each other with your feet together. Instead, stand in a step position facing each other; this way, the lady will more easily notice the gentleman's intention to start through your body movement.

  • In salsa, we always dance with our knees bent—not a knitted knee.

  • ... Furthermore, the Cross Body Lead dance element is also suitable for starting the dance as a preparatory step and getting into a flow.
